Los Nuggets tienen marca de 8-2 en lo que va de la fase final y 16 triunfos consecutivos en su campo del Pepsi Center después que completaron la temporada regular con marca de 54 victorias.
Billups aportó un doble-doble de 28 puntos (10-16, 3-6 y 5-5), repartió 12 asistencias y capturó siete rebotes. “Tuvimos siempre la confianza de que éramos un equipo ganador y eso quedó demostrado en el campo”, declaró Billups, que llega por séptima temporada consecutiva, desde el 2003, a las finales de conferencia, seis con los Detroit Pistons.
El pívot brasileño, Nené Hilario, la gran revelación de la temporada para los Nuggets como titular indiscutible después de la salida de Marcus Camby, a Los Ángeles Clippers, aportó 17 puntos con siete rebotes para ser otro de los jugadores decisivos en los triunfos del equipo de Denver.
Hilario jugó 41 minutos para anotar 8 de 10 tiros de campo y 1-2 desde la línea de personal, recuperó dos balones y dio una asistencia.
El escolta J.R.Smith, en su línea de mejor reserva y sexto jugador, aportó 18 puntos (5-13, 4-10, 4-4), seis asistencias y cinco rebotes. “Todo el equipo ha demostrado una gran madurez y la personalidad ganadora que les puede llevar muy lejos”, comentó George Karl, entrenador de los Nuggets. “Ahora hemos alcanzado otra meta, pero la siguiente será todavía más importante”.
Los Mavericks, a pesar de quedar eliminados también mostraron su mejor baloncesto y los progresos que hicieron como equipo en la segunda vuelta de la temporada, con el alero alemán Dirk Nowitzki, de líder, que aportó 32 puntos, 10 rebotes y siete asistencias.
“Estoy orgulloso de nuestros jugadores y de como se comportaron durante toda la fase final, la diferencia de no seguir adelante es que los Nuggets fueron mejores con hombres como Anthony y Billups que aportaron lo mejor de su clase”, comentó Rick Carlisle, entrenador de los Mavericks.
El responsable técnico de los Mavericks dijo que su equipo siempre estuvo en cada uno de los partidos con opciones de ganar, pero al final los Nuggets fueron mejores y había que darles el crédito y “felicitarlos”.
“Karl ha hecho un trabajo excepcional con el equipo y demostrado toda la experiencia que tiene como profesional de la NBA”, agregó Carlisle.
El veterano base Jason Kidd, aportó 19 puntos con nueve asistencias, tres rebotes, un tapón y un robo de balón.
Mientras que el reserva Brandon Bass fue el sexto jugador de los Mavericks después que logró 17 tantos con siete rebotes, una asistencia y una recuperación de balón.
Otros dos jugadores, el alero Josh Howard y base Jason Terry aportaron 18 y 11 puntos, respectivamente, para completar la lista de cinco jugadores de los Mavericks que tuvieron dobles-dígitos.
