No hay ninguna duda que los Boston Celtics caminan en la defensa de su título de campeones de la NBA en medio del dramatismo y el suspenso de sus respectivas series de la Conferencia Este y en el cuarto partido de las semifinales ante los Orlando Magic tuvieron al alero Glen Davis con héroe.
Más conocido como "Big Baby", Davis, no sólo ha reemplazado con garantía al alero estelar Kevin Garnett, sino que además con su canasta en la última décima de segundo del partido permitió a los Celtics ganar por 94-95 para empatar a 2-2 la serie al mejor de siete y recuperar la ventaja de campo.
La acción de Davis salvó a los Celtics de regresar a su campo del Northbank Garden, de Boston, con una desventaja adversa de 1-3 que les hubiese puesto al borde del abismo de la eliminación, mientras que ahora recuperan todas las posibilidades de estar de nuevo en las finales de la Conferencia Este.
La serie regresa a Boston, donde el martes se jugará el quinto partido y volverá de nuevo a Orlando para el sexto en viernes.
Davis, que tenía promedio de 10,6 puntos en los tres partidos anteriores esta vez surgió con 21 tantos y seis rebotes, para ser el segundo máximo encestador, sólo superado por Paul Pierce que llegó a las 27 anotaciones (9 de 15 tiros de campo).
Pero la aportación de "Big Baby" fue decisiva en el cuarto periodo cuando anotó siete de los 16 puntos que lograron los Celtics y capturó cinco rebotes después que los Magic remontar al conseguir 23 tantos.
"Estaba tan metido en el juego y la concentración que ni tan siquiera vi reflejada las emociones de lo que había conseguido", comentó el entrenador de los Celtics, Doc Rivers. "Llegamos al cuarto periodo con el partido bajo control, pero Glen nos salvó".
Antes el base Rajon Rondo había hecho también su trabajo al aportar un doble-doble de 21 puntos, 14 rebotes y dos asistencias para los Celtics que completaron el tercer periodo con parcial de 71-79.
El pívot Kendrick Perkins también se apuntó al doble-doble de 12 tantos con 13 rebotes, mientras que el escolta Ray Allen, estuvo en su línea de inconsistencia ofensiva al quedarse con 12 anotaciones (6 de 13 tiros de campo).
Los Celtics que tuvieron un 52 por ciento de acierto en los tiros de campo, se pusieron con marca de 4-0 cuando en los partidos de la fase final han superado el 40.
Pero fallaron en los triples con el 10 por ciento (1-10) y en las personales con sólo el 66 (18 de 27).
"Se trataba de conseguir la victoria y recuperar la ventaja de campo y eso fue lo que hicimos", destacó Rivers. "Hay que darle crédito a los Magic".
El pívot Dwight Howard aportó 23 puntos con 17 rebotes para conseguir su vigésimo doble-doble como profesional en la fase final y fue de nuevo el líder en el ataque de los Magic.
Mientras que el alero Rashard Lewis lo apoyó con 22 tantos, pero el equipo se quedó con sólo un 40 por ciento de acierto en los tiros de campo y el 18 en los triples (5-27)
