Los Lakers olvidaron el ridículo protagonizado en Houston el pasado domingo y se convirtieron en una imparable máquina, de perfecto engranaje, para destrozar a unos entregados Rockets (118-78) y rozar la final de la Conferencia Oeste (3-2).

Kobe Bryant volvió a liderar en ataque a su equipo con 26 puntos, y recibió la inestimable ayuda de Pau Gasol, con 16 tantos y 13 rebotes. Por Houston, una sombra del equipo que asombró en el cuarto duelo de la serie, destacó el argentino Luis Scola, con 12 puntos y 13 rebotes.

“Tenemos que demostrar de qué pasta estamos hechos”, avisaba el ala-pívot español en la previa, y los californianos, ante la atenta mirada del escritor colombiano Gabriel García Márquez -en primera fila-, pasaron como un rodillo por encima de su rival, que llegó a perder por 40 puntos (94-54).

Los problemas en la espalda de Lamar Odom propiciaron la titularidad de Andrew Bynum, cuestionado a lo largo de las eliminatorias por el título debido a su pésimo rendimiento.

Sin embargo, hoy, sin el lesionado Yao Ming enfrente, el joven pívot dio el callo. Fue el encargado de anotar, junto a Bryant, los diez primeros puntos de su equipo, y frenar el vendaval de juego de los Rockets, que arrancaron con un espectacular parcial de 4-11 a su favor.

El equipo de Phil Jackson se puso rápido las pilas. Los Lakers elevaron el nivel de intensidad en defensa para poner las tablas (18-18), y la entrada en pista de Odom, ovacionado por la grada, espoleó a sus compañeros para adquirir una provechosa renta al término del primer periodo (35-24), tras un triple sobre la bocina de Jordan Farmar.

El Staples Center vibraba. Sus jugadores, que parecían imbuidos por el realismo mágico de Gabo, actuaban bajo un asombroso embrujo en el que daba la impresión de que todo lo que lanzaran a canasta acabaría convertido en canasta.

Los angelinos abrieron el segundo cuarto con un parcial de 8-0 (43-24) e instantes después, con un Bryant tocado por los dioses, acecharon la treintena (64-35, m.23) ante unos Rockets sin respuestas.

No sólo deslumbraban los locales, sino que también dejaban claro que, finalmente, han aprendido la lección y saben mantener una amplia ventaja hasta el final. Superaron la barrera de los 30 puntos de brecha (78-47) y siguieron martilleando el aro del equipo de Rick Adelman (Los Houston Rockets) hasta el final del periodo (94-54), cuando Ariza puso la puntilla con una cesta circense.

El partido hacía rato que se había acabado y los últimos doce minutos sólo sirvieron para dar minutos a los secundarios de ambos equipos, que entrase en cancha DJ Mbenga por petición popular y que el público hiciera la ola, algo inusual en la NBA.

Este jueves los Lakers pueden lograr el pase a la final del Oeste si vencen en el Toyota Center, de Houston.
