En una nota realizada por el diario deportivo Ole!, Juan Ignacio "Pepe" Sánchez comentó que le gustaria mucho retirarse jugando la Liga Nacional de Basquet.
"Algo me dice en mi interior que debería retirarme en la Liga. No sé si es mi inconsciente o qué... Años atrás era impensando, pero ahora noto que es una deuda moral." fue la primera referencia que el campeón olímpico hizo sobre el tema. Con lo de "Deuda Moral" se refería a que le gustaría devolverle a la ciudad (Bahia Blanca) todo lo que le dió. Que le gustaría que los chicos de la ciudad experimenten cosas como las que el experimento cuando era chico con Marcelo Richotti.
También habló sobre 'condiciones' que el quisiera que se cumplan para su regreso, cuando le consultaron sobre las mismas comento que: "No es plata ni nada parecido. Es que las cosas se hagan bien. Si no, no las hacemos. Me gustaría no tener que pasar tanto por lo desgastante, lidiar con muchas cosas extradeportivas... Sé que es difícil, que no puedo pretender que la Liga sea la ACB, pero mejorar la logística, la organización, el equipo... Ojalá se pueda, me gustaría retirarme en la Liga."
