El día viernes 15 de mayo de 2009, en un hospital de Tulsa, estado de Oklahoma, falleció a los 44 años Wayman Tisdale, ex NBA, luego de batallar durante más de dos años contra el cancer.
En la universidad de Oklahoma, donde al mismo tiempo que era parte importante del equipo de los Sooners, también tenia tiempo para ser parte de la banda músical de la Universidad. Fue seleccionado tres veces como el mejor jugador del año de la Conferencia del Big Eight. Todavia tiene el record de puntos anotados de toda la NCAA en sus primeros años de Univeridad (Freshman y Sophomore), como también el primer 'Sooner' en ser elegido como miembro del primer equipo All-American de las universidades de Estados Unidos. Tisdale también es el único jugador de Oklahoma University que tiene su numero retirado (23) en el basket.
En los Juegos Olimpicos de Los Angeles 1984, Tisdale fue miembro del equipo de Estados Unidos que contaba entre otros con Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Alvin Robertson, Chris Mullin, Sam Perkins.
En el Draft de 1985 fue seleccionado en 2º lugar por los Indiana Pacers, detras del Miembro del Salon de la Fama Patrick Ewing, quien a la postre fue elegido como Rookie del año.En su primera temporada en la NBA (1985-86) promedió 14,7 puntos por partido y 7,2 rebotes. Con numeros muy parecidos en las siguientes temporadas (14,5 y 5,9 en la 86/87, 16,1 y 6,2 en la 87/88 y 16,0 y 6,5 en los 48 partidos que disputó con los Pacers en la 88/89), Tisdale fue transferido a los Sacramento Kings. Fue alli donde brindó lo mejor en la NBA, lo restante de la temporada 88/89 mostró una gran mejoría, terminando con un promedio de 19,8 puntos y 9,6 rebotes. Las siguientes dos temporadas tuvo un promedio de más de 20 puntos y 7 rebotes de promedio. El transpaso de Mitch Ritchmond a los Kings en la temporada 1991/92, trajo aparejado una disminución en los numeros de Tisdale, pero logró junto a Mitch Richmond uno de los mejores duos de la epoca en la NBA, aunque sin mucho suceso en post-temporada.El comienzo de la temporada 1994/95, Tisdale fue transpasado a los Phoenix Suns, donde jugó 3 temporadas, logrando un promedio de 10 puntos y 4 rebotes por partido en sus primeras dos temporadas, pero decayendo bastante en la tercera y última (6,5 puntos y 2,2 rebotes), aunque con una gran merma de minutos por partido (unos 14 por partido de promedio). Esta, la temporada 1996/97 sería la última de Tisdale en la NBA, ya que a los 33 años, decidía retirarse del basket profesional, para dedicarse a la música, su otra gran pasión.
Como músico, Tisdale fue un bajista que aprendió por amor a la música, nunca aprendió a escribir música, ni como se llamaban las notas ni de que forma escribirlas, pero a pesar de eso, el escribir a letra y música de sus discos. En total fueron 8, con un detalle que el último, Rebound, del año 2008, se trata de su lucha contra el cancer que le estaba quitando la vida.
Tisdale fue diagnosticado con cancer el 8 de febrero de 2007, cuando se calló bajando las escaleras de su casa y se fractura la pierna. Los estudios indicaron que parecia de Osteosarcoma en la articulación de su rodilla derecha. Lamentablemente, el tratamiento de Quimioterapia no resultó lo efectivo que se esperaba y en agosto de 2008, parte de su pierna derecha fue amputada. Su recuperación parecia milagrosa, el especialista en protesis Scott Sabolich, declaró que en general, el aconstumbramiento al uso de una protesis, tarda entre 4 y 6 meses y que en el caso de Tisdale, tan solo le había llevado uno.
