Hayes, que hizo una gran labor defensiva sobre el ala-pívot español Pau Gasol en la primera parte, también recuperó cuatro balones, dio dos asistencia y puso un tapón.

Los Rockets, que sólo perdieron 10 balones por 11 de los Lakers, también tuvieron al base Kyle Lowry como su mejor jugador del banquillo al aportar 12 puntos (5 de 8 tiros de campo y 2-2 desde la línea de personal) para completar la exhibición del equipo de Houston.

De los Lakers, que también perdieron al alero Lamar Odom, con lesión en la espalda, sólo Gasol se salvó al conseguir 30 puntos y nueve rebotes, líder del equipo en ambos apartados, pero su aportación se produjo cuando el partido estaba ya decidido a favor de los Rockets.

Gasol jugó 39 minutos para anotar 11 de 17 tiros de campo y 8-13 desde la línea de personal, puso dos tapones y dio una asistencia.

Pero a Bryant le faltó la inspiración ante el gran marcaje que le hizo Battier y anotó 7 de 17 tiros de campo, con 13 puntos conseguidos en la primera parte y sólo dos en la segunda, para simbolizar la derrota de su equipo.

El comienzo del partido fue espectacular para los Rockets con Battier infalible en los tiros a canasta con 4-4, incluido 3-3 triples, y 1-1 desde la línea de personal, para 12 puntos que permitió al equipo de Houston ponerse con parcial de 29-16, mientras que Bryant logró nueve y cinco fueron de Gasol para los Lakers.

Pero lo más importante para los Rockets, habían puesto nervioso a Bryant que se dirigió al veterano árbitro Dick Bavetta para reclamarle una falta que le habían hecho en el tiro a canasta y recibió una falta técnica.

Jackson comprobó que los titulares de los Lakers no podían controlar sus emociones y su energía para el juego era muy inferior a la que estaban aportando los Rockets, con Brooks magistral en la dirección, y Hayes como factor sorpresa, mucho más físico que Ming.

Los reservas no cambiaron nada para los Lakers porque el banquillo de los Rockets, dirigidos por Lowry fue también muy superior y no sólo mantuvo la diferencia de 13 puntos sino que la llego a incrementar hasta 19 con parcial de 41-22 y siete minutos para concluir la primera parte.

La cara de Jackson era todo un poema al ver como un equipo con los dos jugadores franquicia y sin hombres altos de calidad le estaba dando toda una lección de juego a sus estrellas.

El parcial de 54-46 al descanso no dejó ninguna duda de la superioridad de los Rockets, que jugaron mucho mejor que los Lakers en todos los aspectos, mientras que Adelman también le ganaba en la estrategia a Jackson.

La interrogante era comprobar si Battier, líder indiscutible de la primera parte con 15 puntos (5-7, 4-6 y 1-1), tres rebotes y un tapón, junto con Brooks y Scola iban a poder mantener bajo control a Bryant (13 puntos) y ellos la inspiración de un 50 por ciento de acierto en los tiros de campo.

La respuesta la dio de inmediato Brooks con la primera canasta de la segunda parte para un parcial de 56-36, la mayor ventaja que se había dado en el partido.

Pero faltaba todavía lo peor para los Lakers, porque el ataque de los Rockets sintió más que nunca el "instinto asesino" y con tres triples consecutivos --dos de Brooks y uno de Battier-- dejaron un parcial humillante de 67-40 cuando faltaban 6:54 minutos para concluir el tercer periodo.

Faltaba todavía que la ventaja fuese de 28 tantos después de que Odom, que recibió falta en ataque y se golpeó fuerte contra el suelo, protestara a Dan Crawford y recibiera falta técnica que anotó Battier (68-40).

Luego llegaría la exhibición completa del ataque de los Rockets con Brooks imparable al conseguir 17 puntos, incluidos los dos últimos del tercer cuarto, en jugada sensacional de Artest.

The deadly combination of the base guard Aaron Brooks and Shane Battier was the key that enabled the Houston Rockets 99-87 to win the Los Angeles Lakers in the fourth game of the Western Conference semifinals to 2-2 to tie the series at best of seven.
